Potatoes are dug, and cucumbers have gone wild since the recent rain. We had fun digging potatoes and searching for the camouflaged cucumbers. Look at the crazy zucchini that is forming!

Our raised beds in both garden areas are growing like crazy! Cucumbers are beginning to climb on the trellis, tomatoes have re-seeded themselves amazingly, and the larkspur are adding lovely color to the garden areas. (In honor of Earth Day, we have some tomato transplants for the taking if anyone is interested. And, many more that could be dug up and taken home!) Ladybugs are everywhere in the garden beds, and bluebonnets are going to seed, promising a very showy crop next year. If you want any fresh herbs for cooking, there's oregano, sage and thyme needing to be trimmed. Ask if you need more info! Plenty of arugula, as well. The children are looking forward to digging their potatoes in the near future! So much growth....garden walks make great brain breaks.
There is lots to see in the garden areas. The ladybug larvae (commonly known by children as "little alligators") can be seen in many areas of the garden. Strawberries are producing in bed #6 in the courtyard, and the cilantro has begun to flower and tiny pollinators can be seen. Larkspur is beginning to bloom, and the curry plant (gray frilly leaves) in courtyard bed #1 is extremely fragrant---feel free to pinch some leaves to let the children smell it. Check back in a week to see what else is happening!
So much is happening in the garden areas! Take a look below at all that is currently growing. Look carefully for the beans that have sprouted and the potatoes that have begun to grow. And, the strawberries have PINK blooms!
Spring is in the air! Potatoes and strawberries are in the ground, and we have many more plans for crops in the near future. Check back in a few weeks to see all that has been planted!
Welcome, 2024! It's been a mild winter season so far, and the garden areas continue to produce. Look below at the top 10 crops....in ABC order: arugula, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, collards, kale, Swiss chard and turnips. (Bluebonnets, cilantro, larkspur and various herbs are prevalent, as well.) If you want more specifics of where to locate everything, look on the bulletin board in the main hallway, outside the cafeteria. Or, simply take a walk through both garden areas and EXPLORE! There are many butterflies and honeybees fluttering about, as well as cabbage loopers, so OBSERVE carefully.
The rain has been wonderful for our garden beds! Look at everything that's growing. .....The cabbage worms think we planted the collards and broccoli just for them!?!!
Most of our fall crops have been planted! Some bunnies found the first round of our transplants and devoured most of them in the big garden area, but we are trying a couple of things to deter them. Look below for some of the things currently growing, ranging from A-Z....arugula, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, collards, cosmos, kale, passion vine, snapdragons, strawberries, Swiss chard, turnips and zinnias! (Can't forget BASIL...it's flourishing. Please feel free to harvest some and use at home.) We may have created a nice little habitat for our bunny friends with the Passion vine teepee. If you haven't had a chance to see it in full bloom, it's worth a walk to the far garden bed on the big playground.
Over the next 2 weeks, we will be planting our fall crops. Garden beds have been adopted by grade levels, and the students are excited to plant!
Here are a few pictures of what is growing currently. The rain a couple of weeks ago encouraged many of the dormant seeds to germinate. Lots of little sprouts all over! Check back in a couple of weeks to see what all has been added. |
