The birds are going to LOVE all the wonderberries this fall, and the cosmos and sunflower seedlings are competing for space. Thinning all the seedlings will keep all of us busy!
Have a cat at home? Pinch a bit of the catnip, take it home and see if he/she likes it.
The more we pinch, the more it grows!

Summer was hard on the garden areas with the lack of water and unprecedented temperatures. Here are a few photos of plants that survived the summer heat. The Passion vine, Malabar spinach and moss rose are flourishing. The sunflower seeds from these flowers were enjoyed by all of our bird friends this summer.
We are hopeful September will bring some much needed rain and cooling temperatures as the students prepare and plant our fall garden beds. Check back in a few weeks for updates. Here we GROW! Potatoes, beans, squash and peppers galore! Much fun was had harvesting all the produce and enjoying the sunflowers
that bloomed just before the end of the year. We hope everyone has a wonderful summer. See everyone in the garden in the 2022-2023 school year! Here's what is currently happening in our two garden areas. LOTS to observe and learn! Watch carefully for caterpillars on the dill. Butterflies have been spotted laying eggs. AND....the passion vine is beginning to take over on the large tipi in the big playground garden area. PLUS, the tricolor beans are about to bloom! Feel free to snip some catnip for your cat at home. The Shiso has re-seeded and quite prolific. Wonderberries also re-seeded, and we are going to be harvesting "tiny, blue berries" by the handfuls soon. We will be harvesting peppers, squash and tomatoes very soon! Zinnias are about to bloom; morning glory vine has re-seeded itself; and, the snapdragons are quite showy!
The bulb bed is looking extra bright with the Dutch irises in bloom. Look carefully right below the bloom....a ladybug! EDIBLES..... Kindergarten is enjoying the STRAWBERRIES they are growing. This is our 5th batch of ASPARAGUS harvested this year! SQUASH.....POTATOES....and KALE (ladybug enjoying the aphids!?) Larkspur, sunflowers and cosmos promise to be showy in the weeks ahead!
Last week was a fun time in the garden areas....seeds sprouting, bugs munching and bulbs blooming. Here are some samples of things planted last week....PLUS our bumper crop of asparagus! We will keep you updated on all we're learning about in the outdoor areas. Thank you to our wonderful PTO for helping purchase the supplies we need for the garden areas. The last two pictures show: 1) beautiful, grape-scented mountain laurel blooming in our courtyard, AND 2) our first purple larkspur about to bloom in the big playground outdoor learning area---pink and white ones soon to follow. Happy exploring!
SPRING is in the air! Some beds are planted, and we're watching closely for germination. We are preparing other beds for planting after spring break. Take a look below at what is currently happening in both school garden areas: The KALE (1) is beginning to produce once again after the freezes. Look carefully in the middle picture for ASPARAGUS (2). Preparing the peacock bed for "CUCUMELONS (3)--they look like tiny watermelons and taste like cucumbers. Can't wait to plant them! LARKSPUR (1) is everywhere and should be blooming beautifully in a few weeks. One CABBAGE (2) is remaining, and IRISES (3) are beginning to sprout in our bulb bed. See if you can find the BLUEBONNET (4) plant in our courtyard. ....Happy to say that the LAVENDER (5) and STRAWBERRIES (6) survived! Looks like the "iwonder" bed is going to be full of WONDERBERRIES (1) once again.
We're anticipating the sprouting of our RED, WHITE and BLUE (2) potatoes we planted a couple of weeks ago. If anyone needs CILANTRO (3), please harvest it! The MOUNTAIN LAUREL (4) in the courtyard are full of blossoms and should be very showy this spring! The cat has tons of MINT (5) surrounding it...coming back beautifully! Broccoli, cauliflower and peas! Check back next week for all the greens and root crops ready to enjoy.
Artichoke is very happy! Broccoli in 2nd grade bed. The leaves are monstrous! Lots of carrots, cilantro and collards in our future! Larkspur just now germinating for a showy winter and lavender in full bloom....and SOOO fragrant! Letting the okra go to seed so we can collect and re-seed next in the spring. 3rd grade's peas are beginning to vine and will soon have blooms. Look at 5th grade's radish harvest!! .....2nd grade decided radishes are NOT one of their favorite vegetables. Plenty of thyme to go around! Tomatoes are still hanging on. Violas! ....Look at the tiny plants germinating around the violas. Larkspur! The "iWonder" bed is going strong.....wonderberries have re-seeded and blooming like crazy!
